So, you’re a student-athlete looking to reduce the price of higher education with an athlete scholarship. Well, it won’t be easy. According to NCSA, an organization that connects student-athletes in middle and high school to college coaches, fewer than 2% of high school student-athletes receive scholarships. And even fewer of those receive a scholarship that covers all their expenses. Most athlete scholarships are partial, which means they only cover a part of your expenses. But if you’re confident in your skills and determined to make your dreams come true, the journey ahead is a long one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world of US college sports<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are three main organizations when it comes to college sports. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior Collegiate Athletics Association (NJCAA). Among these, the NCAA is the most well-known and well-funded. However, the other two organizations also have great teams and opportunities for their players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NCAA manages student athletics at about 1,100 US schools, including the Ivy League. Schools fall into one of three divisions within the organization. Division 1 schools get the most funding, so they usually offer scholarships with higher amounts and are often the most competitive to get into. Division 2 and 3 schools receive less funding, so their sports facilities may not be as good as those in Division 1. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any good teams or players in Divisions 2 and 3. Many of their top teams could even compete with Division 1. However, it’s important to note that Division 3 schools don’t give out athlete scholarships as they’re more focused on academics. To qualify for the sports program of the NCAA, you need to have a high school diploma, a 2.3 GPA, and an SAT score between 960 and 1000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NAIA has similar academic requirements to the NCAA. You need an 18 on the ACT or a 970 on the SAT, a 2.0 GPA, or you have to be in the top half grades-wise among all the students graduating that year in your school. They’re smaller than the NCAA, with about 250 schools, and generally have more foreign players. The NAIA doesn’t have divisions; their teams are about the same level as a Division 2 NCAA team. Since sports aren’t the only thing that matters to most student-athletes, many chose NAIA schools over NCAA schools because of the academic programs offered or for other personal reasons. The NAIA also recruits year-round, unlike the NCAA, which has a set date when coaches can contact high school students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the NAIA and the NCAA, which are 4-year programs, the NJCAA is a 2-year program. They have low academic requirements. If they started competing in sports in the later years of high school and didn’t have time to build a resume, student-athletes can join an NJCAA school as a stepping stone before moving onto the NAIA or NCAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After finishing junior college, athletes can transfer to a NAIA or NCAA school if they’ve played well and meet the academic requirements. The NJCAA is also a good option for international students to have time to assimilate into the culture and language because of its lighter academic programs. It could potentially help foreign student-athletes establish their presence through competitions and tournaments and get noticed by coaches in the US who hadn’t seen them play before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application process <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing to do is, well, play sports. The journey starts very early. Coaches see potential recruits as young as 14 years old. Starting early gives you time to develop your skills and build your resume. It’s never too late to start, but the early bird gets the worm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But don’t train in secret! Show your skills to the world, even if you’re not that good yet. You should join as many competitions as you can (as long as it doesn’t affect your academics too severely). If you’re in a team sport, try going for individual achievements as well, like best setter in volleyball or best goalkeeper in football. Teamwork is important, but your individual skills are what make schools interested in you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be able to apply, you need to be verified at an eligibility center. These centers make sure that student-athletes meet the requirements to play at their schools. With the NAIA, you’ll need to set up an account on their website and fill out all the necessary information about your academics. You’ll have to do the same with the NCAA, though make sure to check which Division you’re qualified for since each division has different requirements. You’ll also have to verify your amateurism, meaning that you’ve never received payment for playing your sport (prizes may or may not fall into the category of payment depending on the situation). Make sure to check the rules clearly on their websites and that all your transcripts go through the correct channels!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that you’re verified, it’s time to set up your profile! Your profile is the first thing coaches see when recruiting. You need a resume of your athletic and academic history and a highlight video around 7 to 10 minutes long. Try to distinguish yourself throughout the whole run time; your goal is to be remembered by the coaches, so if you have something worth bragging about, this is the time to do so. Don’t stop there, though. You also need to show. So put in footage of your best moments on the field or during training. Having referrals from parents and coaches about how you’ve grown is also a good addition! Some coaches may ask for footage of a whole game along with your highlight video as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it’s time to email coaches. The only requirement for this email is a link to your profile. Be professional, but also to the point! Most coaches aren’t going to have time to read the essay you sent. Just be sincere and let your profile speak for itself. Also, don’t forget about emailing the assistant coaches! You’re likely to get a higher chance of response since they’re more focused on recruitment than the head coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re talented enough, you may be offered an official tour of the school. These tours are partially sponsored by the school itself, so if you’ve been invited to one, it’s very likely that you’re one of the coach’s top recruits. You’re not out of the woods just yet. The coach will be evaluating you on this trip. Not just athletically but also in the way you behave. So be polite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you’re very, very sure of your decision and you’re chosen by the school, some Division 1 and 2 NCAA schools have a letter of intent program. It’s a document stating that you will attend the school and play for their team for at least one academic year and that the school will provide you with financial aid for that year. This guarantees your scholarship and a spot at the school! This program is completely voluntary, and you don’t have to sign a letter of intent to get an athlete scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
