Studying abroad isn\u2019t cheap! It doesn\u2019t need to be more expensive with hidden or add-on fees. Here are some tips to help you save money:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1. Consider all your options before buying textbooks.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

College textbooks are notoriously expensive. According to the “Education Data Initiative”, Students spend between $628 and $1,471 on average each year on textbooks and other supplies. The average price for a hard copy is between $80 and $150. Some could cost as much as $400. The College Board suggests a budget of $1,200 for textbooks each year. Students usually have to pay out of pocket for these expenses on top of their tuition and other living expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes older editions can still be used for the same course, so if your professor approves, you should definitely consider buying second-hand books at a discounted price. You could also ask students in the year above yours if they could give you their text book for free. If you’re lucky, some professors will give you a free PDF of the needed material. In some classes, textbooks may not even be used that often. If that’s the case, you could try sharing with a classmate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Buying in bulk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can usually get a better price for some items if you buy them in bulk. Take toilet paper, for example. At Walmart, a 9-roll pack of Angel Soft toilet paper costs $6.68. This means that one roll costs about 74 cents. A 36-mega roll pack from the same brand costs $24.12. At this price, an individual roll only costs 67 cents. A difference of 7 cents isn’t much, but you’re actually paying less for more toilet paper. The amount saved isn’t large, but it adds up over time. And since toilet paper doesn’t expire, you don’t have to worry about it going to waste, so it’s a very wise choice to buy the larger pack!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With other items that may go bad if you buy too much and don’t use them in time, primarily food, you could share with your friends and ask them to pitch in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Keep track of your spending.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It’s important to be reflective about your spending habits. If you use money carelessly without a plan or budget, you’ll never get the opportunity to save up for future plans or emergencies. Try keeping a journal of how much you spend and what you spend it on. Set realistic spending limits for each month, and commit to those limits. Try your best not to buy anything on impulse. Carefully consider anything you purchase to make sure you’ll need it and that you’ll need it often enough to justify the price. Just remember, if you’re not sure if you really want it, put it back on the shelf! Only buy something when you’re absolutely sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re not in a dorm, try to reduce your utility bills. Turn off the lights when you’re out of the house, save water, and don’t open windows when the AC is running. A little goes a long way each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s no harm in saving the coupons you get in the mail or in magazines. You never know; maybe they’ll come in handy. Some supermarkets have a discount on fresh food near closing time, so be sure to ask employees about clearance sales. Most brands also have apps that you can download for discounts and other deals. Try asking for a student discount any time you can. Most digital services, like Photoshop, Windows, and even Spotify, have student discounts. If you live in a college town, it’s likely that local restaurants will have great deals for students as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Reduce your waste.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s also good for your wallet! Some stores charge a fee for plastic bags, and those fees add up over time, so it’s better to get a reusable bag to do your shopping. Depending on where you are, some stores will give you a bit of money when you return glass bottles. And instead of throwing away old clothes, you could resell them and make some extra cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
