The 2000s and 2010s were booming times for the tech industry. Hundreds of new companies and start-ups were established. We saw the rise of new social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, and YouTube. In 2012, Glassdoor reported that the “national average for a software engineer\u2019s base salary is $92,648”. In the same year, Computer Science became Stanford’s most popular major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone working in the tech industry was seen as having a cushy job with a high salary and fantastic amenities. We’ve all heard of the glamor of Silicon Valley. Many young adults entering the workforce dream of being in an office like Google’s, with free company bikes, a beach volleyball court, an arcade, free organic food, and an environment that encourages creativity for their innovative projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, things have taken a shift in recent years. In late 2022, many tech companies announced massive layoffs. On October 17th, 2022, Microsoft laid off close to 1,000 employees. On November 9th, Meta announced that it was preparing to lay off 11,000 people. Five days later, on November 14th, The New York Times reported that Amazon was about to cut 10,000 jobs. It would later be reported on December 2nd that Amazon was actually planning to cut 20,000 jobs. On March 10, 2023, the Silicon Valley Bank Collapsed. And though this event had more to do with banking, it caused a further loss of economic confidence in the capital of the tech industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in these uncertain times, is it still wise to go for a degree in Computer Science and work as a software engineer? What can college students expecting to join the tech industry expect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the tech bubble bursting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even though there have been large layoffs, tech jobs still have very high salaries, averaging $106,227 in the US, according to Glassdoor. In an interview with CNBC, Ben Leong, a professor of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore, stated that “The big tech companies will continue to pay what they used to pay. They always pay a lot.” At the same time, he also touches on how smaller tech start-ups can’t keep up with the big companies, saying that he “suspects that the growth in the median pay will either stagnate or even drop.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demand for software engineering jobs also continues to rise, increasing by 17% in 2023. Even though big tech companies are periodically shrinking, software engineers and IT personnel are still needed in other sectors. In the digital age, the vast majority of businesses rely on databases to operate. Supermarkets need a system to keep track of their inventory. Hospitals rely on vast databases to manage the treatment of their patients. All these systems need to be maintained and repaired regularly. As Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, stated in a CNA interview, “There aren’t a lot of companies that don’t need software engineers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So is the tech bubble going to burst? Probably not. Graduates still have plenty of high-paying job opportunities straight out of school and a stable, fulfilling career in front of them. And even if the bubble did burst, however unlikely that may be, historically, the tech industry has bounced back resiliently, as we’ve seen with the dot-com bubble burst of the 1990s. Lines of code will still make billions as innovation marches on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is going to college for Computer Science still worth it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do you really need to pay thousands of dollars and spend four years of your life learning codes? Well, not necessarily. After all, tech success stories are often about an innovative individual who went against the traditional mold and took a risk with their one-of-a-kind ideas. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg all dropped out of college, forgoing professional education. Self-taught entrepreneurs and tech start-ups that made it big are almost clich\u00e9 at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the current situation has changed considerably. As the tech industry grew and big companies formed near-monopolies, it became harder and harder for small businesses to compete and survive. So if you want to succeed moderately but safely in the tech industry, it’s much better to be an intrapreneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that case, you could try to teach yourself how to code through freely available resources. However, you wouldn’t get the connections and opportunities for work experience that a formal education offers. Then should you just go to a coding bootcamp where you’re taught the basics of coding in about 4 months instead of taking a 4-year degree? Coding bootcamps cut out most of the theoretical knowledge and teach you more practical knowledge right off the bat. This means teaching you how to work with certain programs and systems right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, these programs may become obsolete in the future, at which point you would lack the theoretical knowledge to change along with the technology. Bootcamps don’t have as many standards and regulations as colleges, so their quality can vary wildly. Bootcamps are also very expensive, ranging from $15,000 to $30,000. Additionally, without a proper degree, you may not get hired by more established companies. Instead, you should expect to work for much smaller, less well-known companies for less pay. You might save time by not getting a formal education, but you’re also limiting your options in a very competitive industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it stands, a Computer Science degree is still worth your money and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And AI art has received major backlash from the public. Additionally, other technologies, such as NFTs and the blockchain, have come under massive criticism. Now more than ever, developers and software engineers must answer questions not only about the capability of technology but also about ethics. It’s a tumultuous time, so if you still dream about joining the tech industry, it would be wise to expect these controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
