But just because they’re growing up doesn’t mean their inner child has faded away. They’re still young and energetic, but they have enough freedom to get into all sorts of escapades. And sometimes, these escapades evolve into strange traditions. Here are four of the weirdest college traditions:

1. Erin Clark for the Boston Globe

The year was 1994, and Justin Cave, a resident of MIT’s Random Hall dorm, bought a carton of milk. He then completely forgot about said milk carton after putting it in the fridge, only to re-discover it 10 months later. His floor threw a birthday party for the now-long-expired milk as a joke. But they didn’t get rid of it after that. As Justin himself said, “We can’t throw it out just after we had a birthday party for it. That would just be rude!”

So the carton of milk stuck around for another year, and they threw it another birthday party. And the year after that. And the year after that… The paper carton eventually dissolved away, at which point they put it in a plastic jar and sealed it. On the lid of the jar, “Best if used by October 20, 1994” was written. In 2023, this carton of milk will be 29 years old.

2. And this landmark would make history again when, on November 16, 1949, 138 students from the University of Ghent stormed the castle in protest. The police and firemen finally got the students out of the castle, but none were prosecuted.

The reason for their protest? A new tax on beer that pushed up the price. And surprisingly, their stunt worked, and the tax was removed. A poem was even written about the event by Eugeen De Ridder, which was later turned into a song by Armand Preud’homme.

3. A house is a dorm complex of about 300 to 500 students. Each house has its own dining hall and library, as well as its own unique quirks and mascots. Each year, freshman students get to find out which house they’ve been assigned to on Housing Day, the last Thursday before spring break.

Upperclassmen get up early in the morning and don their house colors. Some even dress up as their house mascots and paint their faces! They gather in the Yard, holding flags and banners, all yelling their house chants really, really loudly. How loud? Well, a local news station once covered the event, mistaking it for a protest against the war in Iraq. After they’ve been given the letters for the students who have been assigned to their house, they deliver those letters personally. As a group.

So if you’re a freshman at Harvard, you can expect a bunch of upperclassmen to come into your room screaming and cheering as they accept you into their house!

4. At the end of the year, the rats would be euthanized and given a funeral. Though the use of real rats stopped in 1985, the funerals carried on with toy ones. They’d be dressed in formal clothes and placed in tiny coffins. The entire freshman class, dressed formally in black and mourning, would all attend the service, where a “priest” would give the rats a respectful goodbye. Then, they would march across campus to the chosen burial site. This ritual is seen as a rite of passage for the freshman students, who are often seen as weak and mocked, just like the rats. As they marched, upperclassmen teased them, trying to break their façade.

Finally, one by one, solemnly put an item that represented their freshman year into the coffin. Once the coffin is buried, a plague is placed in the memory of the rat.

Những câu chuyện “đi vào lòng đất” ở các trường đại học

Đại học là bước đầu tiên với nhiều người khi tiến vào đời trưởng thành.
