According to Forbes, the tuition fee for college has grown by 180% in the span of 40 years, going from $10,231 annually in 1980 to $28,775 in 2020. And for most US college graduates, the only way they can afford their degree is to take out a student loan, which will likely follow them far beyond their graduation. Federal Student Aid reports that in 2022, 43.5 million US citizens have federal student loans.

If a graduate follows the standard federal loan repayment plan, it would take ten years of monthly payments to pay off their debt. But the time it takes as well as the amount paid to be free of student loan debt also depend largely on the debtor’s income. This is largely due to amortization. When you pay student loan debts, you pay the principal, the amount of money you borrowed to go to college, as well as interest, the percentage you have to pay the bank to even have this loan. Banks have to make money too, after all. And to ensure the bank doesn’t lose their money, interest is paid before the principal. This could mean that even though you pay every month, you’d only be paying the interest, not the principal.

For example, John has $30,000 in student loan debt with a 5% interest rate. Before any payment is made, John’s balance is $30,000. Divided equally over 10 years, he would have to pay $318.20 each month. When John’s check enters the bank, $125 goes to interest, and the remaining $193.20 goes to his principal. Now his balance is $30,000 minus $193.20 (starting balance minus that month’s principal payment), equal to $29,806. The interest rate in amortization is calculated as Balance x (interest divided by the amount of payment in a year). With an interest rate of 5% and monthly payments 12 times a year, John’s interest rate for next month would be $29,806 x (5%/12), which is equal to $124.20. As time goes on, John pays less towards interest and more towards his principal. This continues until his balance reaches $0 and he’s free of student loan debt.

But what if John can’t afford to pay $318.20 monthly? Then he can use a different financing plan that is income-based. John now makes a payment of $80 per month with the same Balance and interest rate. But $80 isn’t enough to even pay off his $125 interest, and no money goes to his principal. As a result, John’s balance has actually increased because his principal payment for that month was $0 and he still owes the bank the $45 in interest his payment couldn’t cover. So now John’s balance is $30,045. Not only that, John’s interest rate for next month has also gone up to $125.23. If he makes the same payment the following month, his interest and balance will continue to rise.

This program is only set up to last for 20 to 25 years. After that time span, all of John’s unpaid debt would be forgiven, meaning that he wouldn’t have to pay it anymore. However, the US Government Accountability Office found that only 11% of borrowers in John’s situation are eligible to be forgiven. The rest have to keep paying. For a lot of Americans, this weight is heavy and chains them back from life milestones such as getting married, buying a house, or starting a family since all of those actions are expensive both short-term and long-term. Going to college is seen as the most sure-fire way to get a good job and a stable life. Yet many graduates are being financially punished for going into higher education. Some think that the price of a degree is another barrier preventing more people from entering the workforce as skilled laborers, resulting in a hindrance to economic growth.

In 2020, during the midst of the pandemic, there was a pause on federal student loan debt payments to relieve economic pressure on US households. The interest rate on the debt was also set to 0%. On August 30th, 2023, the pause will be lifted, and interest rates will return to what they were initially.

President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, announced last August, aims to improve the way student loan debts are handled. Any unpaid interest would be forgiven so that the balance doesn’t go up. Meaning that if John made an $80 payment, he would not have to pay the $45 of leftover interest; it wouldn’t be counted in his balance. The plan also aims to partially cancel student loan debt for over 43 million US citizens, costing an estimated $400 billion. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that President Biden doesn’t have the authority to go ahead with this plan. In a speech on July 1, 2023, President Biden announced a new path for his goal of relieving student loan debt for as many Americans as possible. Though this approach may take longer, President Biden assures that he’s “directing his team to move as quickly as possible.”

Khoản vay sinh viên hoạt động như thế nào?

Đi du học ở Hoa Kỳ tốn rất nhiều tiền.
