During the COVID-19 epidemic, the cancellation of SAT and ACT testing dates encouraged a tendency among institutions to rethink the value of these exams in admissions. Despite the fact that many schools are now test-optional, student participation in the SAT and ACT is on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the College Board, 1.7 million high school students in the class of 2022 took the SAT at least once, an increase from 1.5 million in the class of 2021. And, while still significantly below pre-pandemic levels, about 1.35 million students in the class of 2022 took the ACT, a 55,000-student gain from the previous year, according to ACT data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ACT results for the class of 2022, on the other hand, fell to a 30-year low, with an average composite score of 19.8 out of 36, down from 20.3 for the class of 2021. SAT scores have also fallen. The class of 2022 averaged 1050 out of 1600, whereas the class of 2021 averaged 1060. Here are some ACT and SAT test prep suggestions for students striving for a good score on either exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#01: See if you can test for free.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paying for college is a costly financial journey that frequently begins before students even attend. Students can check into price waivers because the SAT and ACT cost more than $50 each. While some states subsidize testing fees for public school pupils, this is not the case throughout the country. The earlier students begin preparing for the SAT and ACT, as with most parts of the college planning process, the better. According to Jolyn Brand, founder of Brand College Consulting, this allows students to acquire the largest amount of preparation time before taking the test, which can assist relieve test anxiety. “The simplest way, though it may not be the most popular with students, is to do a lot of prep, “she claims “The more prep they have, the less surprised they\u2019ll be and the less nervous they\u2019ll feel about what to expect.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#03: Take practice tests to decide between the SAT and ACT.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the SAT and ACT are comparable, they do differ in several key factors. The ACT, for example, has a science portion, whereas the SAT does not. The ACT often includes geometry questions, whereas the SAT does not, according to Ginger Fay, director of global partnerships at Georgia-based Applerouth Tutoring. Some experts recommend that prospective applicants take a practice test for each exam before deciding between the two. Applicants can then concentrate their efforts on studying for the exam on which they performed best. Exposure to both assessments, according to Fay, can assist pupils know what to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#04: Establish targets and test dates early on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts recommend that kids visit college applications websites to see if a school is test-optional or test-blind. Test-blind means that even if you submit your test scores, they will not be evaluated. “Take the test and then decide whether or not you want to submit your scores based on the schools you decide you want to apply to,” Fay adds. “Don\u2019t take yourself out of the running of some schools just because you don\u2019t have that credential.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts advise parents not to become unduly involved in directing test prep; to avoid leaning on their own testing experience, as exams have evolved over time; and to avoid obsessing over a certain result after a single exam date. “These exams are simply not a true indicator of how smart or intelligent a student is,” says Christopher Rim, CEO and founder of Admissions Consulting firm Command Education. “Parents should create an environment that encourages growth and should refrain from comparing their child to other students.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#7: Choose the best exam prep course.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAT and ACT test preparation classes can differ in a variety of ways, including class size, teaching style, and face-to-face or virtual alternatives. According to test experts, college applicants should consider how much help they will need studying for the exam, how much they can pay for a class, and what their ideal learning environment is, among other things. They should also look into free options like Khan Academy, which is an official test prep partner of the College Board, which administers the SAT. “Not everything has to be paid,” Christina, a top college admissions counselor at a New York-based education consulting firm, explains. “Testmaster.Online is wonderful; it has lots of free resources.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#8: Look into additional test preparation resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While test preparation programs are one choice for preparing for the SAT or ACT, there are other solutions that are much less expensive. Libraries, for example, frequently stock test preparation materials. To prepare for college admissions examinations, students should ask teachers which test topics will be barely covered or not taught in class, how to find tailored study materials, and how to organize study groups with peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Sara Williams, a school counselor at Briggs High School in Columbus, Ohio, those who take the PSAT will often receive their test booklets back along with their score, and they should underline questions they got wrong so they know what to review for the SAT. PSAT students can also link their College Board accounts to Khan Academy to receive free individualized diagnostic practice assignments and practice exams that focus on particular areas where they need to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing the answers is not enough to ace the SAT or ACT; there is also a time constraint to consider. Dawdling will almost certainly have an impact on the final outcome, leaving test-takers with unanswered questions and a lower score. Test prep experts recommend spending no more than 60 seconds on arithmetic problems, scanning reading sections for context, glancing at the questions and then reading more in depth as needed, and trusting their intuition when it comes to the language sections of both exams. Taking the PSAT, as well as at-home timed practice tests, can help kids get a feel for the testing environment and the time constraints that come with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
